Welcome to my Cobley Family Tree!

My Cobley Family Search

My name is Vanessa and I am a direct descendant of the Cobley family of South Devon on my Mum's side.  The branch of Cobleys to which I belong were very well known throughout South Devon in the late part of the 19th century and also for a lot of the 20th century.

This site was mainly started to assist me in tracing my family tree but also to maybe connect various families of Cobleys who may also share the same interest in our history.

The Cobley Family was and is well known throughout Devon but through my searching I have also come across further connected branches of Cobleys in such places as Hull and Essex, America and Australia.

We do not know too many exact details about the earliest of the Cobleys.  We do know they lived in the Ashton / Trusham area of the Teign Valley in Devon.  At times Trusham moved in and out of the parish of Exminster - know then as the Exminster Hundreds.  This means we can't be sure that if a record says "Exminster", it doesn't mean Trusham or Ashton.  What we do know is that at this time the Cobleys were mainly farm labourers working on some of the many estates in this area.  I have been lucky in that my direct line has a lot of its history in photos around the late 19th century although we don't know why the photographer was so interested in our Cobley line.

I had gained most of my information about my generation and the two generations before myself from our Family Bible and relatives.  I had also thought I had done a fair bit of research on the internet until I contacted a relative in Australia who enabled me to trace my lineage back to the early 1700s - Fantastic Stuff!

I am always interested to hear about other trees and would love to make this an interactive site for other family members to contact each other and swap stories and information.  So ideas are always welcome!
